Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin (MCH) is the average amount of hemoglobin in a person’s red cells. Normal MCH levels are around 27 to 33 picograms (pg) per cell in adults.
Causes of high MCH:
Macrocytic anaemia –such as
- Megaloblstic anaemia
- Non-megaloblastic anaemia
- Liver disease
- Haemolytic anaemia
- Alcoholism
- Myelodysplastic syndrome
- hypothyroidism
Causes of low MCH:
Microcytic hypochromic anaemia –such as
- Iron deficiency anaemia.
- Thalassaemias
- Sideroblastic anaemia
- Anaemia of chronic disease
